Summer Student Gardener

Golden Town Outreach

Job Description:

The Meaford Community Gardens Summer Student Gardener will work as part of a team alongside the Meaford Community Gardens coordinators learning about all aspects of coordinating and maintaining a community garden. More specifically youth will learn about and help with:

  • Crop planning, including diverse vegetables, perennial crops such as raspberries and fruit trees
  • Transplanting and seeding
  • Organic weed and pest control
  • General garden maintenance
  • Harvest and postharvest handling
  • Composting system, organic material collection from local restaurants/cafés and building soil fertility
  • Helping facilitate with youth garden programming
  • Developing areas of the garden and garden design
  • Promoting Meaford Community Gardens and its activities through social media
  • Coordinating and running the Meaford Community Gardens Market
  • Delivering produce to the Golden Town Outreach Food Bank
  • Attending Meaford Community Garden meetings
  • Helping with the Community Kitchen at the Victoria Village Family Resource Centre

Minimum Requirements / Work Experience:

Desire to learn about food systems, literacy & skill-building; Calm, focused, curious, flexible, self-motivated & can work alone or part of a team; Experience with growing food, agriculture, educational programming & working with youth; Excellent communication, organization, public relations, conflict resolution & time-management skills; Ability to work weekdays, evenings & occasional weekends; Between 15 & 30 at the start of the employment; Was registered as full-time student in previous year & intend to return to school full-time next year.

Other Job Requirements:

Valid G Driver’s License, considered an asset.
