News Post - National Drowning Prevention Week

National Drowning Prevention Week Kick-Off Event!

Join us as we kick off National Drowning Prevention Week with an engaging and educational event hosted by the YMCA of Owen Sound Grey Bruce!

The Lifesaving Society designates the third week in July (July 21-27, 2024) as National Drowning Prevention Week (NDPW) to focus community and media attention on the drowning problem and drowning prevention. In 96 per cent of drowning deaths in children under five, supervision was absent or distracted. Most drownings are preventable in a Water Smart community, and only through Water Smart education and a healthy respect for the potential danger that any body of water may present can we genuinely enjoy the beauty and recreation opportunities offered by these bodies of water.

This event promises to raise awareness and educate the community on the importance of water safety while having fun! Join us for a variety of activities including a free swim, water safety demonstrations, exciting prizes and giveaways, and more.

Date: Sunday, July 21
Time: 10:00 AM – 2:30 PM
Location: YMCA Health, Fitness & Aquatics facility, 700 10th Street E (North Parking Lot)

Partner Day: free access to YMCA Health Fitness & Aquatics facility & programs for Owen Sound residents

This event is made possible with the support of Ontario Power Generation’s Power for Change Project, supporting grassroot initiatives in the communities where OPG operates. The YMCA of Owen Sound Grey Bruce is a proud participant, the Empowerment Grant support will help to educate individuals and families how to have fun around water while being safe.

Join us in making a splash for safety! Together, we can ensure water safety for everyone in our community.
