Apprenticeship provides individuals with the opportunity to learn a skilled trade through on the job training under the direction of a qualified tradesperson. Apprenticeship combines on the job training with classroom instruction at the post-secondary level or Union approved training facility to prepare an individual for a job in the skilled trades.

There are currently over 150 apprenticeable trades in Ontario in four sectors: construction, industrial/manufacturing, motive power and service.

Getting Started

A YMCA Employment Advisor will help you assess and evaluate your skills, interests and career goals and provide you with information and resources to help you decide which trade you are interested in.

Once you have decided which trade you would like to pursue you will need to find an employer/sponsor who is willing to sign you on as an apprentice. Your Employment Advisor can make suggestions of which employers to approach, who is currently seeking an apprentice and how to best market yourself to an employer.

Skills Upgrading

A $1000 Apprenticeship Scholarship is available to eligible Employment Ontario participants pursuing an apprenticeship to assist individuals who require upgrading to meet the academic requirements for apprenticeship training in their chosen trade.

To qualify for the Apprenticeship Scholarship you must:

  • be unable to meet the academic requirements for the trade in which you wish to register as an apprentice
  • be committed to meeting the necessary academic requirements for your chosen apprenticeship program within one year
  • demonstrate an interest in the skilled trades

The Apprenticeship Scholarship will be delivered in two equal installments:

  • $500 when the participant registers for and makes a commitment to upgrading their education
  • $500 when the participant successfully completes academic upgrading, is hired and registered as an apprentice
