The Court Support Worker is responsible for assisting individuals with mental disorders who are preparing for release from incarceration.

  • Receive referrals from the accused individual as well as from families, friends, police, defense counsel, crown attorney, community agencies working with individuals with the identified mental disorders who are charged with minor offences
  • Gather information to complete a psychosocial assessment including medical and relevant criminal background and the current and existing support services network
  • Meet with the individual at the court to assess their suitability for the diversion program including assessment of their mental health status, their current living and psychosocial issues
  • Provide support and information to the accused and their family
  • Determine that the individual is not violent and will not present issues of safety to the general public
  • Develop an individualized service plan when the individual consents to participation in the diversion program
  • Present recommendations for a Diversion plan to the Provincial Crown Attorney and occasionally the Federal Crown for approval
  • Provide case management and counselling to individuals that have been approved for a Mental Health Diversion and report to the court as required
  • Provide consultation to the Provincial and Federal Crown Attorney regarding individuals presenting with mental disorders who are either too high a risk of violence or the charges are too serious to support a diversion plan
  • Provide consultation support and resources to the jails in the management of inmates presenting with mental disorders



  • Knowledge of pharmaceuticals used in the treatment of mental disorders
  • Ability to advocate and coordinate service access
  • Current knowledge of adult mental health services, community services and the justice system in Grey Bruce
  • A university degree in a relevant program
  • Registration with a professional college (eg College of Social Workers or College of Registered Psychotherapists)
  • Experience working with clients with serious mental illness and/or addictions

Rate of Pay (Hourly):

$30.94 - $34.14 (5 step grid)

Hours of Work:

37.50 hours per week and some evening work may be required.

The normal work day is 8 hours, including a 30-minute unpaid lunch break
