Infection Control Professional

Permanent Full Time

Competition #2021-12

The Infection Control Professional will work with GBHU and Public Health Managers in infection prevention and control. The ICP will support and assist staff with the management and control of declared outbreaks, assist Public Health Managers in the delivery of programs and policy development and assist with the implementation and delivery of MOHLTC public health standards and protocols related to infectious diseases.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Act as a consultant to daycares, schools, private business an d industry in the development of human resource policies and practices concerning infection prevention and control
  • Assist with the development and delivery of educational programs on infection prevention and control practices to staff, agencies and health care institutions
  • Assist with the development and role out of an infection control liaison group for GBHU health care agencies
  • Provide input on the development of suitable surveillance systems for detecting, recording and maintaining accurate program statistic on infections in a variety of settings
  • Complete audits in infection prevention and control within health institutions and community health agencies. Assist these sites to modify their practice as needed
  • Assist the communicable disease team in the surveillance, investigation, case management, and education prevention of reportable and communicable diseases
  • Provide support to the Public Health Manager to identify emerging program and service trends for operational planning purposes
  • Participate in public health emergency situations and outbreaks as required
  • Maintain communication with and reports significant information to public health managers in a timely manner
  • Communicate and exchange information, ideas and opinions clearly, effectively and appropriately both internally and externally
  • Complete investigations related to complaints associated with Infection Prevention Control (IPC) lapses in sites where there are regulated healthcare professionals
  • Provide guidance if required to Policies and Procedures and medical directives. Contribute to development and ongoing maintenance of these documents as they relate to the responsible program areas
  • Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with others within the organization, and external partners as appropriate
  • Assess and interpret legislative changes and recommend and implement new and/or updated work methods
  • Demonstrate awareness of the organization’s vision, mission, values and strategic objectives
  • Practice in accordance with CNO and other relevant legislation (i.e. duty to report)

Specific Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • In depth knowledge and demonstrated skill in the areas of decision making, critical thinking, problem solving, leadership and resource management
  • In depth knowledge of infectious disease
  • Knowledge of epidemiology
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skill in public health practice including working knowledge of applicable Public Health, Ontario Public Health Standards and relevant protocols, policies and standards and infectious disease protocols
  • Familiarity with the use of computers and information systems
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Health & Safety Act and applicable regulations as it relates to the position
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, administer, organize and prioritize tasks
  • Demonstrated skills in data analysis and evaluation methods
  • Knowledge in the use of advocacy and policy development
  • Proven skills in teaching, presenting and facilitating groups
  • Ability to access, understand and utilize research literature to support and promote evidence based practice.
  • Communicates in a clear and professional manner, both orally and written, and tailors communication to the audience adapting content and format as appropriate
  • Excellent command of the English language including spelling, grammar and punctuation
  • Demonstrated ability of good working relationships with public and staff, including ability to work collaboratively with other staff and in multidisciplinary teams and interagency committees
  • Committed to a safe and healthy work environment for both employees and clients
  • Proven ability to work independently within limits of professional scope of practice and within GBHU policies, medical directives and guidelines

Qualifications:

Education – Training – Experience

  • Completion of an approved university baccalaureate degree in nursing OR Completion of a post-secondary degree from an accredited academic institution
  • Current Registered Nurse Certificate of Competence from the College of Nurses of Ontario, and a member in good standing preferred
  • Certificate from the Certification Board for Infection Control and Epidemiology (CBIC).  In the absence of Certified in Infection Control (CIC), successful completion of Introduction to Infection Prevention and Control course (Queen’s University or Centennial College) with agreement to obtain CIC within 3 years of hire
  • Two (2) years of experience in infection control preferred
  •  Previous progressive experience in a Public Health field is preferred, including thorough knowledge of communicable disease control and infection prevention and control

Other:

  • Working hours will vary within a 35-hour paid work week with evening and weekend work required
  • Required to work in a general office setting
  • A valid Ontario driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle required

The current wage scale for the position of Infection Control Professional is $ 38.28 to $ 46.36 per hour.
