Owen Sound, August 25, 2023 – Our YMCA community, and the Owen Sound Grey Bruce community at large, is mourning the loss of Sharif Rahman who passed away Thursday evening, succumbing to injuries he sustained from a horrific assault one week ago outside his restaurant, The Curry House.
Sharif’s unwavering dedication to our community, and the genuine warmth with which he touched the lives of everyone he encountered, will forever be etched in our hearts.
Sharif was a past Board member of the YMCA of Owen Sound Grey Bruce, and has continued his strong support of the Y as: a Health, Fitness and Aquatics member; an Employer who utilized YMCA Employment Services to offer job opportunities to community members; a supporter of YMCA’s Grey Bruce Settlement Services programs and activities welcoming newcomers to Owen Sound and Grey Bruce; and through his business, The Bee Café in the Julie McArthur Regional Recreation Centre, located just outside the main entrance to the Y, which he and his family run.
We know these are just a few ways in which Sharif leaves a lasting legacy of compassion and care for his community.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Sharif’s family at this time, as the entire Owen Sound and Grey Bruce Community attempts to come to terms with Sharif’s passing as a result of such a senseless act of violence.
Another silent walk, in peace and respect, will take place on Sunday, August 27, starting at 8 p.m., meeting again at City Hall and following the same route as Wednesday’s walk.
Owen Sound Police Services report that members of the Criminal Investigations Branch and Community Oriented Response and Enforcement Unit are continuing to investigate.
Persons who may have further information or video recordings are asked to contact the Owen Sound Police at 519-376-1234 or information may be provided anonymously to Grey Bruce Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-Tips (8477).
