Board of Directors

YMCA of Owen Sound Grey Bruce Volunteer Board of Directors

The overall governance, responsibility and accountability for our YMCA lies with the Board of Directors. This dedicated group of community volunteers provides vision, strategic leadership and stewardship for our Association.

Board members volunteer their time to lead the YMCA of Owen Sound Grey Bruce in achieving our mission. The Board usually meets bi-monthly, six times a year as during the school year and Directors also participate in a committee of their choice (i.e. Finance, Governance & Nominating, Fundraising, and more) which meets as necessary.

Learn about our current Board of Directors:

Gwynne Potter, President
Gwynne joined our Board of Directors in September 2013 after being impressed with the critical role that the Y plays in our community and wanting to be a part of this positive process. Now she is the Y Board President with an interest in and long history with not-for-profit organizations. Gwynne is a Partner at Collins Barrow SGB LLP Chartered Professional Accountants firm in Owen Sound. Gwynne and her husband Terry reside on the family farm just outside of Chatsworth where they raised 3 wonderful children.

Maria Canton, Past President
Maria has been on the Y board for the last 7 years, and a YMCA member for close to 20 years. She was drawn to the board because of the work the Y does, for the values it represents through programming and the various services it offers in the region. Seeing firsthand the power and positive impact the Y can have on people, regardless of what stage they’re at in life is just one of the reasons Maria enjoys volunteering on the organization’s Board of Directors.

Bruce Price, Vice President/Treasurer
Bruce has been a Chartered Professional Accountant in public practice for over 35 years serving small businesses, not-for-profit organizations, individuals and estates. As part of his core belief of paying back to the community he has lived and worked in for almost 40 years, Bruce actively volunteers in many charities. Prior to joining the Y board he completed a 5 year tenure on the board of the Bruce Trail Conservancy as well as 10 years on its finance committee. He has also served as chair of the regional hospital, Chamber of Commerce and many local service organizations. After hours Bruce devotes time to his church and sings in its choir. He and his quilting wife Janet have four grandchildren under the age of 9 all within a reasonable driving distance. They have first claim on any free time Bruce & Janet have or chose to make.

Danielle Landry, Vice President
Danielle has been with the Board for four years and now serves as our Vice President. She joined the Board of Directors because she believes in the importance of the work done by the YMCA of Owen Sound Grey Bruce in our community. Danielle is a lawyer, practicing in the areas of personal injury and criminal defence, and lives and practices in Owen Sound. She can often be found taking part in fitness classes at our Y.

Mark Barbosa
Mark is a new member to the Y Board as of September 2018. Mark and his family moved to Owen Sound a year ago and are greatly enjoying the community. Mark and his family are committed to making this community their new home, so he looks forward to being involved with the positive work the Y does while also having the opportunity to meet new people and give back. Mark is a Realtor with Century 21 in Owen Sound.

Brianna Cavan
Brianna joined the Y Board in September 2018. She was drawn to the Board because she believes strongly that the YMCA of Owen Sound Grey Bruce does invaluable work in our community, and she looks forward to being more involved with the organization. She has a long standing personal connection with our Y, having been a member since was a child. She spent a large part of her childhood at the Y facility as a swimmer with OSAC. Brianna grew up in the area, and returned in 2014 to practice as a registered midwife at Midwives Grey Bruce.

Liz Cranny
Liz has been with the Y Board since 2013. The Y has been a major part of Liz’s life as her and her husband have been Y members for a combined 70 years and their kids have been members since birth. Growing up in Owen Sound, Liz understands the value and importance of having a small town community and loves that she can focus her attention to this while serving on the Y Board. When she’s not at the Y or with her family, Liz can be found with Owen Sound Police Service as she works as a Police Constable.

Evelyn Dean
Evelyn has been with the Y Board since 2017.

Ann Dumyn

Ann is a graduate of the ICD Corporate Governance College, Directors Education Program (February 2006), Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto.

Lindsay MacDermid
Lindsay has been with the Y Board since 2013 and currently serves as Vice President. She was drawn to joining the Y Board because of its reputation as a community cornerstone that, through diverse programming, addresses the many factors affecting the health of the Grey Bruce community. Lindsay works as a Public Health Program Evaluator at the Grey Bruce Health Unit. She lives in Owen Sound with her husband and their son.

Colin McIver
A member of the Y for more than 20 years, Colin started out as an enthusiastic member of the Fat Boys Running Group that ran out of the Y at lunch time. Now that his knees no longer handle running so well, Colin takes advantage of many of the other opportunities for fitness offered by our YMCA. After enjoying the Y for so many years, Colin felt he needed to do whatever he could to give back to the Y and was very happy to join the Y Board in 2015. He also serves as a long time board member of the Owen Sound Hospital Foundation. Colin and his wife are both physicians and have been proud to raise 4 wonderful children in this area since 1985.

Rhea Rimmer
Rhea Rimmer has been with the board at the Owen Sound YMCA since 2015. She joined the YMCA in an effort to put her talents to use within the community outreach programs in the area. In the past, Rhea has worked as an RPN; she did so for eight years. She is currently a front desk manager at an Owen Sound based hotel. Rhea resides in the Owen Sound area, where she enjoys many of the local outdoor activities, but her passion is her involvement with the local YMCA and all it does to help the community.

Scott Vining
Scott has been with the Y Board since 2016.

Grace Walker
Grace is excited to be joining the Y’s board of directors commencing September 2018. Grace and her husband moved to the area three years ago and soon learned of the scope and positive impact the Y has on our community. Grace is a Chartered Professional Accountant and a retired executive with 27 years of finance experience, recently with CIBC. Grace also volunteers teaching functional fitness to seniors with the Victorian Order of Nurses.

Julie Ziel
Julie is new to the Y Board as of September 2018 and is also a volunteer at the Y in the Fitness department. Julie has a Bachelor of Communications Degree, with Majors in Journalism and Public Relations.  Julie is very knowledgeable in fitness and works out regularly at the Y. She brings to the board a different view on several areas and she is eager to learn new things and be a voice for our community.
