The overall governance, responsibility and accountability for our YMCA lies with the Board of Directors. This dedicated group of community volunteers provides vision, strategic leadership and stewardship for our Association.
Board members volunteer their time to lead the YMCA of Owen Sound Grey Bruce in achieving our mission. The full Board meets about once a month as during the school year and Directors also participate in a committee of their choice (i.e. Finance, Governance & Nominating, Fundraising, and more) which meets as necessary.
Learn about our current Board of Directors:
Maria Canton, President
Maria has been on the Y board for the last five years, and a YMCA member for the last 18 years. Maria was drawn to the board because of the work the Y does, for the values it represents through programming and the various services it offers in the region. As the manager of The Roxy Theatre, a small theatre company with upwards of 200 volunteers, Maria has seen first-hand both at work and at the Y, the power and positive impact dedicated volunteers can have on an organization. She loves how volunteers think less about what they can get from the experience and more about what they can contribute. Originally from Southern Alberta, Maria worked as a newspaper reporter for almost two decades in the Northwest Territories, Nunavut and at The Calgary Herald. She has lived in Owen Sound for 12 years.
Gwynne Potter, Vice President/Treasurer
Gwynne is a Partner at Collins Barrow SGB LLP Chartered Professional Accountants firm in Owen Sound. She has a particular interest in and long history with not-for-profit organizations. Gwynne joined our Board of Directors in September 2013 after being impressed with the critical role that the Y plays in our community and wanting to be a part of this positive process. Gwynne and her husband Terry reside on the family farm just outside of Chatsworth where they raised 3 wonderful children.
Lindsay MacDermid, Vice President
Lindsay has been with the Y Board since 2013 and currently serves as Vice President. She was drawn to joining the Y Board because of its reputation as a community cornerstone that, through diverse programming, addresses the many factors affecting the health of the Grey Bruce community. Lindsay works as a Public Health Program Evaluator at the Grey Bruce Health Unit. She lives in Owen Sound with her husband and welcomed a baby boy to their family in early 2017.
David Johnstone, Past President
David joined the Y Board in 2011 and has served as Finance Chair and President. A Financial Advisor for almost two decades, David’s prior life as a Business Analyst and Relationship Manager in one of Canada’ largest wealth management firms provides experience in business development, financial management and corporate affairs. He joined the Y Board because of sports connection he carried from his youth, but was quickly impressed by the depth of the organisation and the significant impact it has in our region. When David is not on a soccer field as a coach or player, he lives for travel with his wife and two teen sons.
Ann is a retired bank executive who also worked with a world-class engineering company and held director and officer positions in private and public resource sector companies in Canada and the US. She has over 40 years’ experience in business development, relationship facilitation, Aboriginal and northern affairs, project management, strategic planning and financial services. Amongst other not-for-profit work, Ann has served on the Board of Governors of Lakehead University and as Vice-Chair, Board of Trustees, Royal Ontario Museum. She is a graduate of the ICD Corporate Governance College, Directors Education Program.
Kristyn is a new member of the Board of Directors and the YMCA here in Owen Sound. A posting recruiting members to the Board of Directors piqued her interest and one thing led to another. She believes in the power of giving back to your community and wanted that experience again. She feels the YMCA could not be a better fit for her own philosophies on health and wellness. Previously a member at her local Y when she lived in the city, Kristyn was enthusiastic to get back into the swing of things while finishing up schooling at the local college. Now, health and wellness are her priority both personally and professionally as she moves forward in her career in nursing. Being part of the Y family is a wonderful motivator in doing this.
Danielle has been with the Board for three years and is our Youth Delegate. She joined the Board of Directors because she believes in the importance of the work done by the YMCA of Owen Sound Grey Bruce in our community. Danielle is a lawyer, practising in the areas of personal injury and criminal defence, and lives and practices in Owen Sound. She can often be found taking part in fitness classes at our Y.
A member of the Y for more than 20 years, Colin started out as an enthusiastic member of the Fat Boys Running Group that ran out of the Y at lunch time. Now that his knees no longer handle running so well, Colin takes advantage of many of the other opportunities for fitness offered by our YMCA.
After enjoying the Y for so many years, Colin felt he needed to do whatever he could to give back to the Y and was very happy to join the Y Board in 2015. He also serves as a long time board member of the Owen Sound Hospital Foundation. Colin and his wife are both physicians, and have been proud to raise 4 wonderful children in this area since 1985.
Bruce has been a Chartered Professional Accountant in public practice for over 35 years serving small businesses, not-for-profit organizations, individuals and estates. As part of his core belief of paying back to the community he has lived and worked in for almost 40 years, Bruce actively volunteers in many charities. He recently completed a 5 year tenure on the board of the Bruce Trail Conservancy as well as 10 years on its finance committee. He has also served as chair of the regional hospital, Chamber of Commerce and many local service organizations. After hours Bruce devotes time to his church and sings in its choir. He and his quilting wife Janet have four grandchildren under the age of 7 all within a reasonable driving distance. They have first claim on any free time Bruce & Janet have or chose to make.
Rhea Rimmer has been with the board at the Owen Sound YMCA since 2015. She joined the YMCA in an effort to put her talents to use within the community outreach programs in the area. In the past, Rhea has worked as an RPN; she did so for eight years. She is currently a front desk manager at an Owen Sound based hotel. Rhea resides in the Owen Sound area, where she enjoys many of the local outdoor activities, but her passion is her involvement with the local YMCA and all it does to help the community.
George Ross, joined the Board in September 2016 and is a life-long public servant who is drawn to the mission of the YMCA in our community. He is currently President and CEO of George Arthur Ross and Associates Inc., a consulting services business that he operates from his home in Owen Sound Ontario. Prior to that Mr. Ross spent over 33 years in Public Service including appointments as Deputy Minister of Northern Development and Mines, Deputy Minister of Research and Innovation with the Government of Ontario and acting President and CEO of the Yukon Development Corporation with the Yukon Territorial Government. A Certified Board Director, Mr. Ross has served on numerous Boards. As an active volunteer he currently serves on the Board of Children’s Mental Health Ontario and as a Director of the Bluewater (Outdoor) Education Foundation. George and his wife Trudie are the proud parents of three adult children and live in Owen Sound.
Volunteering on the YMCA Board of Directors is a wonderful way to give back to your community in a leadership role.
