I moved to Owen Sound almost three years ago. I lived in North Bay, born and raised. I was married for 26 years and have 4 beautiful children. My whole life was my family. I loved being a wife and above all else, a mother.
Unfortunately, things changed and my husband went down a wrong path and tried to take me with him. No matter what I tried, it didn’t work so the only thing left was for me to move. As my mother lives in Owen Sound, I moved here. It was hard being away from my children and being alone. My mother suggested I find a job, something to give me purpose. As she once worked at the Y and loved it so much, she suggested I meet Jenny. As someone who had not worked for some time, Jenny took a big chance on me and I thank her for that every day.
The beginning was rough but Nic and Jenny didn’t give up on me. The Y became my home. The people I work with and the members have all had a huge impact on me. The Y has made me stronger and has given me the tools I need to succeed. It has given me back my confidence. I feel loved and cared for and I’m seeing the difference that the Y has made for so many people with my own eyes.
The YMCA is a name we have all grown up with, but since I started working here I see firsthand how important the YMCA is. Just when I thought my life was over, the Y has given me purpose and strength to keep going. It has made me stronger and, most importantly, I’m proud of what I have overcome. I try not to think about where I would be if it wasn’t for my YMCA family and I only hope I can give back what it has given to me.
There are so many people I could thank but I might forget some. Every single one of you has a special place in my heart. I can hold my head up high again and my children are proud of me and that is the best feeling. Thank you, YMCA.
I am proud to say I work for the Y. No matter what role I play, I like to think I’m helping and I finally feel like I’m home.
When I think of the Y, I think of the wonderful lady I get a hug from every Saturday. I think of the guy who always has a smile and a hello for me when I walk by his office. I think of the lady who is always there for me. I think of the young man who always stops to talk to me and reminds me of my son. I think of the lady down by the program rooms who makes my day brighter the minute that I see her. I think of the lady who signs to me whenever she sees me. I think of the guy who always high fives me when he sees me and asks me how I’m doing. I think of my work bestie who always has my back and keeps me sane on bad days. I think of the guy who always makes me feel important and like I can do anything. I think of that special lady who never gave up on me and I think of all the members who have become so special and important to me, every single one of them. I think of all the kids who I have watched grow and who always stop me to tell me their stories.
At the Y, people matter. Whether you’re welcoming members, supporting programs, or helping behind the scenes, your work can spark confidence, belonging, and brighter futures for others — and yourself.
