ADDICTION COUNSELLOR (PREGNANT & PARENTING)

PERMANENT FULL TIME

Reporting to the Manager Mental Health & Addictions, the Addiction Counsellor provides comprehensive assessment, treatment planning, consultation, referral, supportive counselling, follow-up and case management services to individuals and/or family members concerned about a substance abuse problem. This position also provides public education regarding substance abuse to individuals and agencies in the Grey Bruce catchment area.

 

Hours of work are 37.50 per week. The normal workday is 8 hours, including a 30-minute unpaid lunch break. Some evening and weekend work may be required. Some travel within the Grey-Bruce catchment area

 

  • Conduct comprehensive psychosocial assessments, using required assessment procedures and instruments
  • Formulate treatment plans using internal and external consultation as appropriate
  • Provide treatment services using various therapeutic modalities, including individual, family or group counselling
  • Monitor client progress and modify treatment plan and intervention accordingly
  • Refer to/provide/coordinate such other treatment, follow-up or adjunct services as may be appropriate
  • Develop and/or deliver psycho-educational group services for clients and their families
  • Provide public education regarding substance abuse to individuals and agencies in the Grey Bruce catchment area
  • To work closely with agencies and communities in developing a coordinated approach to deal with potential and existing addiction problems.
  • Provide case management services and involve/establish informal support systems where necessary and appropriate
  • Provide case consultations
  • Participate in case conferences and other service planning and coordination activities on behalf of the client
  • Provide advocacy at the client, program and system level as required
  • Collect client and program statistical data as required
  • Maintain written case records according to program and organizational standards
  • Actively participate in supervision, professional development and ongoing self-assessment aimed at developing/ enhancing professional and clinical knowledge and skills

What you will bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in a Social Sciences or related field with clinical training in assessment and counselling
  • Current registration with one of the professional colleges listed (College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario, Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers, College of Nurses of Ontario, College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario, College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario, College of Psychologists of Ontario)
  • A minimum of three (3) years recent and relevant clinical experience in community addiction treatment
  • Experience in rural service delivery would be an asset
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Maturity, a good sense of humour and ability to work well under pressure
  • An understanding and appreciation of rural communities
  • Strong team skills and ability to work well with peers, colleagues from other agencies, and with various consumer, stakeholder and professional groups
  • Knowledge of addiction theory and relevant best practice guidelines
  • demonstrated skill in working with individuals, families and groups
  • Strong assessment and treatment skills, including proficiency in motivational interviewing and CBT
  • Clinical training and experience related to concurrent disorders would be an asset
  • Ability to work well with community and professional groups.
  • Excellent communication, organizational and relationship skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skill in addiction assessment, counselling and intervention, particularly in engaging and motivating those who are treatment resistant
  • Ability to function well independently and as a team member
  • Sound clinical judgement, particularly with respect to high risk or sensitive situations
  • Skill and experience in planning and delivering community and professional education
  • Skill and experience in writing clinical documentation and formal documents, reports and educational and promotional materials
  • Strong organizational ability, and high stress tolerance
  • A valid Canadian driver’s license and the use of a reliable personal vehicle
  • Minimum $2,000,000 third party liability vehicle insurance
  • A satisfactory police record check including vulnerable sector screening
