Position Title: Language Instructor (Volunteer)

Hours: Variable, depending upon availability.

Shifts: Monday to Friday; Day and Evenings.

Start Date: As soon as possible.

As a charity igniting the potential in people, we are seeking a Language Instructor to assist immigrant newcomers to Canada by delivering language services as outlined by the IRCC Contribution Agreement, in accordance with the Association’s mission and values while following the LINC curriculum for the appropriate class level in order to maximize the newcomer’s potential for successful integration into Canadian life and society.

Responsibilities:

  • Have a thorough knowledge of program standards, guidelines and procedures.
  • Ensure clients complete a language assessment.
  • Provide language instruction for newcomers, following LINC curriculum and continuous intake.
  • Prepare lesson plans that reflect a progression in language learning as well as a review procedure following LINC guidelines as units of study in line with the Canadian Language Benchmarks.
  • Ensure that the materials used are appropriate for the level of the students.
  • Focus on language learning by providing skills that will familiarize the student to everyday living in Canada, and in Grey and Bruce counties particularly, using the four language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing.
  • Plan and organize in and out-of-class activities for students to enhance their language capacity and help orient them to life in the community.
  • Keep informed about issues and regulations which affect the lives of the students.
  • Set-up/take down of instructional space as these are often multi-purpose spaces used by other programming.
  • Maintain students’ attendance records.
  • Observe student performance and record relevant data to assess progress.
  • Submit a weekly report indicating the content and activities of the class.
  • Ensure that an orderly set of files is maintained and that all required forms/paperwork are included and meet required standards.
  • Prepare written reports; participate in staff meetings and staff training sessions.
  • Ensure that all reports and submissions are in by the required date.
  • Participate in portfolio-based language assessment (PBLA) training and implementation. Train and support colleagues in the implementation of PBLA in all classes.
  • Collaborate and refer newcomers needing additional information about employment, education, health care etc. to the Settlement Services program.
  • Contribute to the overall promotion of the language program to recruit new participants.
  • Represent the agency on appropriate community networks focused on newcomer services.
  • Work with program staff and volunteers, as needed.
  • Maintain effective communication with all staff.
  • Identify other opportunities for outreach, specific to the geographic area covered, and assist in developing and implementing strategies to take advantage of those opportunities.
  • Report any and all program issues and concerns, and recommend changes in policies/procedures.
  • Contribute to an overall cooperative team approach.
  • Ensure that personal expertise and knowledge is kept current, applicable to changes in the program direction and relevant to the responsibilities of the position.
  • Participate in all prescribed training including Child Safety and Protection training.
  • Ensure the positive promotion of the Association, it’s programs, and the image of the people we serve, and participate in marketing/promotional activities.

Job Requirements:

  • Be a minimum of 18 years of age.
  • Have current and satisfactory Criminal Reference Check and Vulnerable Sector Search issued no later than ninety (90) days preceding your start date.
  • Have minimum Class G Driver’s License; own vehicle and be willing and able to travel throughout Grey and Bruce Counties.
  • Provide 3 professional references.
  • Have an English as a Second Language (ESL) college certification
  • Have Teachers of English as a Second Language (TESL) certification, have the certification in progress, or be willing to attain this certification.
