MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELLOR

PERMANENT PART TIME

Reporting to the Supervisor Mental Health, the Counsellor is responsible for assessment; individual, and group counselling; referral, and case management services.

 

  • Assess the mental health of a potential client using the psychosocial assessment model
  • Provide client centered resources and opportunities for the client
  • Provide brief and long-term counselling as well as case management services
  • Develop community partnerships particularly with front line staff of other agencies
  • Actively promote CMHA programming through community presentations
  • Advocate on behalf of clients when necessary
  • Demonstrate ongoing professional knowledge
  • Provide counseling using various therapeutic modalities
  • Provide treatment planning using internal and external consultation as appropriate
  • Ensure high quality assessment and treatment of clients
  • Ensure adequate referral when needed
  • Participate in regular staff meetings and contribute to in service activities
  • Collaborate in the multi-disciplinary approach to service
  • Meets professional standards according to the relevant professional code of ethics
  • Accurately and fully maintain statistical reports and client charts according to prescribed policy
  • Individual and group facilitation
  • Actively participate in supervision, professional development and ongoing self-assessment aimed at developing/enhancing own knowledge and skills

 

Hours of work are 22.50 per week. The normal workday is 8 hours, including a 30-minute unpaid lunch break. Multi-demand work environment. Interactions with clients in crisis. Some evening and weekend work may be required. Some travel within the Grey-Bruce catchment area will be required.

What you will bring

  • A university degree at the Masters level in a Social Sciences or related field with clinical training in assessment and counselling
  • Current registration with one of the professional colleges listed (College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario, Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers, College of Nurses of Ontario, College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario, College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario, College of Psychologists of Ontario)
  • Minimum of five (5) years recent and relevant experience in community-based addiction and mental health services
  • Awareness of mental health services, resources and agencies within Grey/Bruce County
  • Ability to work both independently and as a member of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Knowledge of psychiatry, psycho-social rehabilitation, mental health policy and DSM V
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and networking skills
  • Effective decision making and crisis intervention skills
  • Understanding of and sensitivity to the rights and needs of people with addictions and mental illness
  • Understanding and appreciation of rural culture
  • A valid Canadian driver’s license and the use of a reliable personal vehicle
  • Minimum $2,000,000 third party liability vehicle insurance
  • A satisfactory police record check including vulnerable sector screening
