Owen Sound, ON – The YMCA of Owen Sound Grey Bruce is proud to have been selected to receive a grant from Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities, enabling the launch of Waves of Opportunity, a 16-week Lifeguard and Instructor Training Program designed to remove financial and systemic barriers for youth aged 13 to 25 who face challenges accessing sport-based employment and leadership opportunities.
Through this funding, course fees are subsidized, and all required training materials are fully covered, making nationally recognized Aquatic Certifications accessible to youth who may otherwise be unable to participate. The program is designed to support youth in completing one or multiple certifications based on their skills, interests, and previous training.
“Waves of Opportunity is about more than training lifeguards—it’s about igniting potential,” said Sarah Cowley, CEO of the YMCA of Owen Sound Grey Bruce. “With the support of Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities, we’re able to reduce the cost of certification, creating pathways for youth to develop leadership skills, gain employment-ready credentials, and become role models in their communities—both on deck and beyond.”
A Pathway to Leadership and Employment
The program is structured across three progressive levels, allowing participants to advance at their own pace:
- Foundation Skills introduce lifesaving fundamentals, teamwork, and decision-making through Bronze Star and First Aid training.
- Intermediate Certifications build strength, endurance, judgment, and rescue skills through Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross, and Swim Instructor
- Advanced Leadership opportunities prepare participants to become certified National Lifeguards and Lifesaving Instructors, qualified to lead, teach, and supervise in aquatic environments.
Each certification emphasizes personal development, inclusive leadership, and practical skill-building, equipping participants with transferable skills such as communication, problem-solving, teamwork, and accountability—qualities highly valued by employers across many sectors.
Creating Inclusive Access to Aquatic Careers
Waves of Opportunity is intentionally designed for youth who may face financial hardship, physical disabilities, or other systemic barriers. Training plans are individualized, ensuring participants receive appropriate support while working toward industry-recognized certifications.
Graduates of the program are well-positioned for employment at pools, camps, and recreation facilities across the region—helping to address ongoing lifeguard shortages while strengthening community safety.
How to Get Involved
Youth aged 13 to 25 who are interested in participating are encouraged to apply. No prior experience is required for entry-level courses, and YMCA staff will work closely with participants to identify the right training pathway.
